Alessi 9090 Review — Induction-Ready Stovetop Espresso Maker: Snap-on Review

The Alessi 9090 is not just a coffee maker; it’s a design icon. Created by Richard Sapper, this stovetop espresso maker has earned a place in the Smithsonian’s permanent collection. Its mirror-polished 18/10 stainless steel body and innovative snap-on upper chamber differentiate it from conventional moka pots. Available in 1, 3, 6, and 10-cup sizes, it accommodates solo drinkers and small gatherings. The magnetic base enables use on induction stoves, a feature lacking in many stovetop pots. Reviewers consistently highlight the quality of the brew, noting a richer and more robust flavor profile compared to aluminum alternatives. While the price tag is steep, the combination of aesthetics and performance makes it a coveted item for design-conscious coffee lovers. The 9090 represents a marriage of form and function, delivering both visual appeal and a satisfying cup of espresso-style coffee.

Product Overview

Using the Alessi 9090 is a tactile pleasure. The weighted feel of the polished stainless steel and the satisfying click of the snap-on top signal quality. Unlike threaded moka pots, there is no need to align threads and risk cross-threading. The base is wider than many pots, providing stability on stove grates and better heat distribution. The 16.9 fl oz capacity (10 cups) yields about 10 small espresso portions. However, the pot is also available in smaller sizes. The interior bottom rim can be tricky to dry; some users recommend a brief low-heat drying on the stove. The handle, while beautiful, can become warm during brewing—though not overly hot according to most reviews. The design includes a pressure valve for safety. Cleaning requires hand-washing; it is not dishwasher safe. The finish is susceptible to scratches, so gentle care is recommended. The pot is manufactured in Italy, and the attention to detail is evident in the polished seams and the tight seal. For those who prefer a traditional moka pot experience without the fuss of threads, the 9090 offers a refined solution. The coffee basket holds about 20g of coffee for the 6-cup version. Users should avoid filling the basket to the very top to allow for coffee expansion. The water chamber has no clear fill line; experience determines the correct level. Some reviewers emphasize using a coarser grind than espresso to prevent clogs and grinds in the cup. The reducer filter (included with some sizes) allows brewing smaller batches without sacrificing quality. The snap-on mechanism relies on a clean gasket and rim; any coffee grounds can compromise the seal. Regular maintenance of the gasket ensures longevity. The pot's weight is about 1 kg (2.2 lbs), lending stability. The mirror finish is prone to fingerprints but can be polished. Overall, the 9090 offers a user experience that blends ritual with ease.

Build & Materials

The Alessi 9090 is crafted from 18/10 stainless steel, a premium alloy that resists rust and maintains its polish. The mirror finish gives it a reflective, jewelry-like appearance. The snap-on top mechanism is a standout design choice. Instead of a threaded connection, the upper chamber clicks into place with a rubber gasket forming the seal. This design simplifies use but requires the gasket to be clean and the basket lip free of grounds. The handle is attached via a metal band and remains relatively cool during brewing, though some users note it can become warm over time. The base features a magnetic stainless steel bottom, making it compatible with induction cooktops. The pressure valve on the side acts as a safety release.

Cleaning the 9090 requires care. The manufacturer advises against dishwasher use, as it can damage the finish and the gasket. Hand washing with mild soap is recommended. The interior can be tricky to dry completely; a quick final heat on the stove helps. The pot's weight (about 1 kg) adds to its solid feel. The design is both functional and decorative, making it an attractive piece to leave on the stove. The build quality is consistently praised in reviews, with many noting its longevity compared to aluminum pots.

Shot Quality

The Alessi 9090 produces a strong, concentrated coffee that many describe as more potent than conventional moka pots. The improved seal and material lead to better pressure build-up, resulting in a faster extraction. Reviewers report a noticeably higher caffeine kick. The flow is smooth and steady, with minimal sputtering. However, achieving optimal results requires attention to grind size; a fine espresso grind can clog the basket and cause grinds in the cup. A coarser grind, slightly finer than drip, is recommended. The water temperature is similar to other moka pots (around 200°F), so it does not produce true espresso, but the coffee is rich and full-bodied. The pot works well across different heat sources, but users on gas stoves should offset the pot to prevent the handle from overheating. The snap-on seal prevents steam leakage, a common issue with older moka pots. Overall, the performance is consistent and reliable once the user adapts to the specific requirements.

Some reviewers noted an initial learning curve. Overfilling the basket or using too fine a grind can cause steam to escape from the seam, leading to a weak brew. The included reducer filter works well for smaller batches. The pot also retains heat well, keeping coffee warm for a short period after brewing. The handle did not become uncomfortably hot during testing for most users, though using a towel is a precaution. The coffee produced is praised for its smoothness and lack of bitterness when brewed correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Alessi 9090 dishwasher safe?
No, the manufacturer recommends hand washing only. The dishwasher can damage the polish and the gasket.

A coarser grind than fine espresso is recommended. A grind slightly finer than drip coffee works well. Too fine a grind can clog the basket and lead to grinds in the cup.
How do I clean the pot?
Hand wash with mild soap and a soft sponge. The interior bottom rim can be hard to dry; heat the pot on low on the stove for 30 seconds to evaporate moisture.
Does it work on induction stoves?
Yes, the magnetic stainless steel base is induction-compatible. It also works on gas, electric, and ceramic stovetops.
How many cups does the 10-cup version make?
It holds 500 mL (16.9 fl oz), which yields about 10 small espresso cups (50 mL each). The actual number depends on how full you fill the water chamber.
Does the handle get hot?
Most users report the handle stays cool enough to touch without a towel. On some stoves, it may become warm, but not burning hot. Using a towel is a safe precaution.

Excellent for brewing coffee
An Italian friend recommended this moka pot. Initially, I was taken aback by its price, but after handling it, I was impressed by its design and build quality. I later discovered it's even in the Smithsonian! It performs well on my induction stove and brews a delicious cup of coffee incredibly quickly.
Absolutely worth the cost – I'm obsessed!
After a decade with a standard Bialetti moka pot that had become pitted, rusted, and leaky, I searched extensively for a stainless steel alternative. The snap-on upper chamber was a game-changer, eliminating the frustration of screwing on a lid. The wider base fits my gas stove better, and its elegant design won me over. Despite the high price, I took a chance. The first brew was flawless: smooth flow, perfect seal. Both full and half batches worked well. The handle gets warm but not dangerously so. The inside rim is tricky to dry, but low heat fixes that. After trial runs, I used a burr grinder for quality beans, and the coffee was the best I’ve ever made. It even felt stronger than my old pot. I’m thrilled and now consider myself a coffee snob.
Excellent Stovetop Moka Pot
This is my favorite stovetop moka pot. While it is not cheap, the build quality, ease of use, durability, and the genuine pleasure of using a great tool make the 9090 worth the investment (unless you're on a tight budget). I used Bialetti stovetop moka pots for years, and they work perfectly fine. The Alessi 9090 is easier to use because the top snaps on instead of screwing on. It is also a work of art or, more accurately, fine design. So, if you don't mind spending more, you'll enjoy it, and it makes excellent coffee. A word of caution: be careful not to fill beyond the pressure valve, do not overfill the ground coffee basket (leave less than you would with a Bialetti and leave some space at the top for the coffee to expand), and grind the coffee a bit coarser than for a Bialetti. Otherwise, you risk steam escaping from the junction between the water chamber/coffee holder and the upper brewed coffee chamber. The result is little to no coffee in the upper chamber. Coming from a Bialetti, I made all these mistakes until I read the wise advice in the Q&A section.
