Jura ENA 4 Review — Compact Automatic Espresso & Coffee Machine: Review

The Jura ENA 4 is a fully automatic espresso machine designed for coffee lovers who want fresh, single-serve coffee without the hassle of pods or manual brewing. This compact Swiss-engineered machine grinds whole beans on demand, packs them into a puck, and brews a variety of drinks including espresso, double espresso (Doppio), and long coffee. Its small footprint (just 10.7 inches wide) makes it ideal for countertops with limited space, while the user-friendly symbol display simplifies operation. With a 37-ounce water tank and a professional Aroma Grinder, the ENA 4 aims to deliver café-quality coffee at home. It also accepts pre-ground coffee for decaf or alternate blends, adding versatility. Priced around $1,200, it competes with other super-automatic machines but stands out for its simplicity and build quality.

Product Overview

The Jura ENA 4 measures 17.5 inches deep, 10.7 inches wide, and 12.7 inches tall, weighing 21 pounds. Its water tank holds 37 fluid ounces, enough for several cups before refilling. The bean hopper has a modest capacity; some reviewers note that beans occasionally fail to drop into the grinder, requiring a manual swirl to keep the hopper feeding properly. The machine features a stainless-steel exterior with a Nordic White finish, giving it a clean, modern look. It uses a reusable filter (included) and offers programmable coffee strength and volume settings. The control panel uses illuminated symbols rather than a full display, making it intuitive but not overly complex. The ENA 4 is not dishwasher safe, so cleaning requires hand-washing of removable parts like the drip tray and grounds container. It includes a filter system that reduces the need for descaling, a feature praised by users who appreciate low maintenance. The machine operates at 1450 watts and 120 volts, suitable for standard US outlets. While it lacks an integrated milk frother, it can be paired with any separate frother – a compromise that keeps the machine compact and reduces cleaning time.

Shot Quality

When it comes to actual coffee quality, the Jura ENA 4 delivers consistently decent results, though it may not match the depth of flavor from higher-end Jura models. Reviewers report that after some trial and error with grind settings and strength, the machine produces a solid espresso with good crema. The long coffee function is popular for those who want an Americano-style drink. However, multiple users mention that they had to find the right bean and grind combination to avoid weak or overly bitter shots. The machine's heating system is quick, reaching brewing temperature in about 30 seconds, and the Pulse Extraction Process helps maintain crema. Noise levels are comparable to other super-automatic machines – not silent but not excessively loud. One downside is that the single spout is positioned relatively low; standard 12-ounce coffee mugs may not fit, forcing users to use smaller cups or pour out into a carafe. The bean hopper issue, where beans occasionally bridge and don't feed, can lead to an annoying 'empty' warning even when beans are present, requiring a manual tap or stir. Overall, the ENA 4 makes a good cup of coffee that satisfies most casual coffee enthusiasts, but those seeking exceptional espresso might find it a compromise.

The water filter system effectively reduces scale buildup, according to users, and the machine prompts for descaling only when necessary. The grounds container holds about 10-12 pucks before requiring emptying; the sensor is based on a count rather than actual fullness, which can lead to premature messages. When properly maintained, the machine remains reliable over months of daily use. The absence of a steam wand keeps the interior simpler, but anyone who wants lattes or cappuccinos will need a separate frother – a trade-off that many find acceptable given the lower cleaning demands.

The Verdict

8

The Jura ENA 4 is a well-built, compact automatic coffee machine that delivers fresh, consistent coffee with minimal effort. Its strengths lie in build quality, simplicity, and the ability to use whole beans without pods. However, it has quirks like spout height and bean hopper feeding that may frustrate some users, and its lack of an integrated milk system means it's best for black coffee drinkers or those who already own a frother. For the price, it's a solid entry into the super-automatic world, but buyers should weigh the compromises against their daily coffee habits.

5 stars, it's the only product that truly delivers
I dislike wasting money on plastic pods and being locked into a single bean ecosystem. I love the idea of making a single cup of coffee without extra waste, using fresh beans, and this machine delivers. It takes some time to dial in and requires trial and error, but once you figure out the settings, it makes a great cup. That's not a downside—it shows how much control you have. It also looks great and is about as loud as an espresso machine, so it's not too bad. Two issues: the spout height is too low for an American-sized coffee mug, so the Swiss must be laughing at me. Also, the bean container sometimes doesn't let beans fall through, making the machine think it's empty when it's not. My parents have the higher-end version and don't have these problems. Regardless, if you want to move away from Keurig or Nespresso and have similar convenience with more control, this product is for you.
Worth every penny
Fed up with K-Cup pods, but this is expensive yet delicious.
Jura ENA 4 Falls Short: Weak Coffee and Poor Seller Service
I'm very disappointed with the Jura ENA 4 coffee machine. For over $1,000, I expected excellent quality and support, especially since I love my Jura Impressa J9. I chose the ENA 4 as a cheaper option for a second home, but it failed in both performance and the buying process. The unit arrived defective and needed a warranty replacement. Jura's warranty team was great, but the Amazon seller, Everything Kitchens, provided terrible customer service—no empathy or urgency for a faulty, expensive product. After getting a replacement, the coffee was still weak and lacked flavor, even with the same beans and settings as my J9. This was a regrettable compromise. Also, return policies should be more fair: the 30-day window shouldn't start until you get a working product, considering shipping and warranty delays. Overall, I can't recommend the Jura ENA 4 due to poor coffee quality, and I advise against buying from Everything Kitchens. For this price, we deserved much better.
