ROCKET ESPRESSO MILANO Rocket Espresso Appartamento TCA Review — Review

The Rocket Espresso Appartamento TCA is a semi-automatic espresso machine that blends Italian craftsmanship with modern temperature control. It targets home baristas who want pro-level espresso without a commercial footprint. The standout feature is a hybrid PID system that lets you adjust brew temperature by selecting boiler pressure between 0.9 and 1.2 bars. The machine also includes an eco standby mode, an RGB indicator light, and customizable side panels. Hand-assembled in Milan, it promises durability and precision. However, its 68-pound weight and heat exchanger design mean it requires some know-how and counter space.

Product Overview

The Appartamento TCA is an evolution of Rocket's popular Appartamento, redesigned with a new case, frame, brew group, and control board. It measures 17.6 inches deep, 10.7 inches wide, and 14 inches tall, making it compact for a dual-use espresso and steam machine. The 2.5-liter boiler provides ample steam power and hot water, while the heat exchanger system allows simultaneous brewing and steaming. The interface uses buttons and an RGB indicator light that shows heating status, water level, and alerts. The machine ships with a single brew basket and portafilter. It runs on 120 volts and draws 1350 watts. The stainless steel body is available with white, black, or copper side panels. Many reviewers praise the build quality and design, though one report of a damaged unit suggests quality control can vary. The machine is best suited for users comfortable with a learning curve, as dialing in shots requires practice.

Build & Materials

The Appartamento TCA is built around a stainless steel chassis with a brushed finish. The frame and brew group have been upgraded from the original Appartamento for increased rigidity. The machine weighs 68 pounds, reflecting its metal construction and large boiler. The side panels are removable and interchangeable, allowing users to switch between copper, white, or black inserts. The drip tray is chrome-plated and the knobs and portafilter are redesigned for better ergonomics. At 10.7 inches wide, it sits comfortably on standard countertops, but the 17.6-inch depth may require clearance for the rear drip tray access.

The heat exchanger boiler is made from copper and brass, materials known for thermal stability. The steam wand is commercial-style with a rubber tip for heat protection. The water reservoir is accessible from the top and holds 2.5 liters. The control board features a single button for brew and steam, plus a rotary knob for steam and hot water. The RGB indicator light is embedded in the front panel. Overall, the build quality feels solid, though some reviewers noted minor cosmetic issues on arrival.

Shot Quality

The Appartamento TCA delivers espresso with rich crema and balanced flavor, according to multiple positive reviews. The hybrid PID system allows users to fine-tune brew pressure, which affects extraction and flavor profile. The heat exchanger maintains consistent temperature during back-to-back shots, though it requires a short flush before brewing to avoid overheating. Steam power is strong and dry, enabling quick milk texturing for cappuccinos and lattes. One reviewer praised its ability to brew and steam simultaneously without performance drop.

However, there are caveats. The machine has a learning curve for dialing in the grind and dose. The included portafilter is pressurized? Actually, from specs it's a standard brew basket; but some users may prefer a bottomless portafilter (not included). The single negative review reported a machine that stopped working after two weeks and produced under-extracted shots. While isolated, it highlights potential reliability concerns. The machine is not smart-home compatible and lacks programmable shot volumes, relying on manual control. Overall, for those willing to learn, the shot quality is excellent.

The Verdict

8

The Rocket Espresso Appartamento TCA is a well-engineered semi-automatic espresso machine that excels in temperature control and build quality. Its hybrid PID system is innovative for this price range, allowing pressure-based temperature adjustment. The heat exchanger boiler provides sufficient steam and brewing power simultaneously. However, it demands a committed user willing to learn manual operation and temperature management. The reported quality issue is concerning but appears uncommon. For those prioritizing Italian craftsmanship and customization, the TCA is a strong contender. It earns a high score for performance but loses points for weight and learning curve.

Rocket Espresso Appartamento TCA: A Blend of Style and Substance
If you're seeking a premium espresso machine that pairs elegant design with outstanding performance, the Rocket Espresso Appartamento TCA is a top contender. Its sleek stainless steel body and intuitive controls offer both beauty and ease of use. The powerful heat exchange boiler consistently delivers rich, crema-topped shots, while its durable build guarantees long-term reliability. Compact yet versatile, this machine enables home baristas to enjoy cafe-quality espresso without cluttering the counter.
Absolutely Worth It!
This espresso machine is excellent. I have tried both the Kitchen Aid and the Breville Impress, and this one is in a completely different league.
Poor Quality and Early Failure
The espresso machine arrived bent and dirty with a limescale stain, suggesting it was not new. The bent drip tray caused water overflow and limited glass size. After just two weeks of light daily use, the machine failed, producing under-extracted coffee. Not recommended from this seller.
