Ascaso Steel PID Review — Semi-Professional Espresso Machine with PID Review

The Ascaso Steel PID is a semi-professional espresso machine designed for home baristas who demand consistency and control. With its PID temperature control, adjustable OPV, and programmable volumetric dosing, it delivers cafe-quality shots with repeatable precision. The machine's thermoblock heating system ensures rapid heat-up and energy efficiency, while the stainless steel and aluminum build offers durability and a sleek aesthetic. Ideal for espresso enthusiasts who want to dial in every parameter, the Steel PID bridges the gap between home and commercial use.

Product Overview

The Ascaso Steel PID is built around a unique thermoblock platform that heats water on demand, eliminating the need for a traditional boiler. This design allows for a compact footprint and quick recovery between shots. The machine features a 58mm commercial-grade portafilter with a walnut wood handle, and includes five different baskets for versatility with ground coffee, pods, and ESE pods. The side-fill water reservoir holds 48 fluid ounces and is accessible even when the machine is placed under cabinets. The interface consists of tactile buttons and an LED display for PID temperature and pressure gauge. The steam wand is a no-burn design with electronic control, producing continuous steam for texturing milk. The machine operates at 1050 watts on a 120V circuit, but note that it requires a 20-amp outlet as per some reviews. The build quality is robust, with an aluminum frame and stainless steel exterior. The provided accessories include a tamper, blank basket for backflushing, and a drip tray with a mirrored finish. Some users have noted the included baskets are not compatible with standard tamper sizes, but aftermarket baskets fit well. The machine is available in polished stainless steel (as reviewed) and likely other colors. Overall, the Steel PID is designed for those who appreciate adjustability and espresso craft.

Build & Materials

The Ascaso Steel PID is constructed with a robust aluminum frame and a polished stainless steel shell. The exterior has a modern, industrial look with clean lines and a mirrored drip tray. The portafilter and steam knob feature real walnut wood handles, adding a touch of elegance. The machine's build quality is solid; reviewers note the materials and finishes are high-quality. The side-fill water tank is a convenient design for under-cabinet use. Cleaning is straightforward: the drip tray is easy to remove, and the machine supports backflushing with a provided blank basket. The OPV is externally adjustable via a screw, and the thermoblock is made from aluminum and stainless steel for longevity. The water circuit is 100% food-safe AISI 316 stainless steel, preventing metal migration. However, some users have criticized the bright LEDs and the cheap-looking Ascaso lettering on the case, which can be removed. Overall, the machine feels durable and well-crafted.

Shot Quality

The Ascaso Steel PID excels in producing consistent, high-quality espresso shots. The PID temperature control ensures the water is at the optimal temperature for extraction, and the adjustable OPV allows fine-tuning of brew pressure. Reviewers report that the machine delivers shots with rich crema and balanced flavor. The thermoblock heats up in just over a minute, and the machine can pull back-to-back shots with minimal recovery time. The steam wand is powerful and produces microfoam easily for latte art. However, there is a trade-off: the steam wand turns off after 2 minutes of continuous use, which can be frustrating for making multiple milk-based drinks. Additionally, switching from brew to steam temperature takes about a minute, though some users find a workaround by steaming first. The pump is relatively quiet compared to other machines. Overall, the shot quality is on par with more expensive machines, and the adjustability allows users to dial in their preferred extraction profile.

Stunning Espresso Machine with a Few Missing Accessories
The machine arrived well-packed and looks incredible. It produces excellent espresso and steam, even on a 15A circuit. However, it did not include a 20A to 15A adapter or a milk frothing jug. The included baskets don't fit standard tampers, but the portafilter has a nice wooden handle and fits my custom basket. Despite these minor drawbacks, performance is outstanding.
Exceptional Espresso Machine: Ascaso Steel DUO PID
The Ascaso Steel DUO PID has elevated my home espresso experience. Its sturdy stainless steel build is both elegant and durable. The PID controller maintains precise water temperature, yielding consistently rich espresso with great crema. I love the programmability for customizing shots, and the steam wand makes perfect microfoam. Customer support is helpful. Despite the cost, it's a fantastic machine for serious coffee enthusiasts.
Top-tier espresso machine with outstanding features. Continue reading.
This isn't a full review, but from someone who has owned many espresso machines ranging from cheap to very expensive. In the $1000-1500 range, the two best are the Profitec GO and the Ascaso Uno. There's a great online comparison of these two. Both are E-61 style with PID temperature control, but the Uno has extra features. Both make excellent espresso with a good grinder and beans. Check out the DF64 grinder from Turin and beans from FRC in PA and Good Brothers in MI. Seattle Coffee Gear shipped it quickly and packed it extremely well. Unpacking took longer than dialing in my first perfect shot. Now, off to enjoy a dopio ristretto macchiato with a little sugar. I might need two or three.
