ROCKET ESPRESSO MILANO Rocket Espresso R58 Cinquantotto Review — Review

The Rocket Espresso R58 Cinquantotto is a dual-boiler espresso machine designed for home enthusiasts who want café-quality results. Handmade in Milan, Italy, it combines classic E61 group head design with modern touches like a detachable touchscreen PID and a rotary pump. The separate brew and steam boilers allow simultaneous brewing and steaming without temperature fluctuation. With a plumbable option and scheduled auto-on, this machine fits into both small and large kitchens. It is built for longevity with replaceable parts and a commercial-grade rotary pump. While it commands a premium price, the R58 offers the consistency and steam power that serious home baristas seek.

Product Overview

For home baristas who demand commercial-grade performance, the Rocket Espresso R58 Cinquantotto delivers dual boiler capability and precise temperature control. The machine measures 17 inches deep, 22.75 inches wide, and 17 inches tall, requiring substantial counter space. Its stainless steel body is hand-finished in Milan, giving it a sleek and durable appearance. The double boiler system includes a 2.5-liter reservoir that can be used internally or bypassed for direct plumbing with the included filter. The rotary pump is far quieter than standard vibe pumps and allows for smooth operation, even during back-to-back shots. Ergonomics: The low-profile shot timer is mirrored and placed above the group head for easy visibility. The touchscreen PID is detachable and can be positioned conveniently. However, the clearance between the group head and drip tray is limited, making it difficult to fit a tall espresso cup and scale underneath—users may need a shot glass for weighing. The steam wand remains cool to the touch thanks to a double-hose design, a thoughtful detail common on pro machines. Maintenance requires using filtered water to avoid scale buildup; Rocket recommends against tap or distilled water. Daily cleaning includes backflushing the group head and wiping the steam wand. Over time, the steam wand pivot may need food-grade lubricant. The drip tray is on the smaller side; without a direct drain line, it fills quickly during backflushing. The machine is not portable due to weight and size, but it is designed for stationary home or light commercial use. The 58mm portafilter is standard professional size, compatible with many accessories.

Build & Materials

The R58 Cinquantotto is built by hand in Milan, Italy, from high-grade stainless steel. The frame is heavy and precisely assembled, with updated legs and cup rail that give it a contemporary edge. The machine houses two independent boilers: a smaller brew boiler and a larger steam boiler, both insulated for temperature stability. The rotary pump is mounted on anti-vibration pads, reducing noise and wear. The drip tray is stainless steel but relatively small; plumbable models allow direct drain connection for continuous use. The external PID module is detachable and can be placed on a magnetic base, though it is sensitive to accidental touches. The 58mm E61 group head is brass and chrome-plated, with a large heat sink for stable temps. The steam wand features a double-hose design that prevents heat transfer, a common upgrade in commercial machines.

Maintenance considerations: The machine requires periodic descaling if using hard water, but Rocket recommends only filtered water to avoid scale. The group head should be backflushed daily with a cleaning disc. The steam wand pivot needs occasional lubrication with food-grade silicone grease. The shower screen and gasket are replaceable. The portafilter ears are robust but must be handled carefully. Overall, the build quality is excellent, with an eye toward serviceability and longevity.

Shot Quality

The dual boiler system ensures that brew temperature remains stable even during simultaneous steaming. The PID allows precise adjustment within a range of a few degrees, which is ideal for dialing in different coffee beans. The rotary pump provides a quiet, consistent pressure of around 9 bars. The E61 group head offers a gentle pre-infusion when the lever is operated slowly, but many users note that pre-infusion is not as controlled as on machines with dedicated pre-infusion features. The steam boiler produces abundant, dry steam for excellent milk texturing. Reviewers report steam power is outstanding, capable of frothing any milk type with ease.

Noise level is notably lower than vibe pump machines, making the R58 suitable for early morning use. However, some users have reported black specks in the water from initial boilers, possibly due to mineral deposits from factory testing. This issue may persist for months. Additionally, clearance under the group head is tight—barely enough for a 12oz cup with a scale. The drip tray capacity is limited unless plumbed for drainage. The shot timer is a useful addition, but the external PID can be triggered inadvertently. Overall, shot quality is consistently high when the machine is dialed in, offering café-quality espresso at home.

The E61 group head allows manual pre-infusion by slowly engaging the lever, but it is not as controlled as machines with dedicated pre-infusion features. Many users find it difficult to achieve consistent results.
Can the machine be plumbed in?
Yes, the R58 is plumbable. It includes a filter and can be connected directly to a water line, bypassing the internal reservoir.
How long does it take to heat up?
The brew boiler heats in about 5-10 minutes, but the portafilter and group head require around 15-20 minutes for full thermal stability.

My Best Espresso Machine to Date
I love this machine more than any previous one. It offers consistent performance, low noise, and ease of operation. The hot water spout delivers truly hot water, the steaming wand is excellent, and the brewing head is easy to clean. The dual tank/direct line option is great, and the pump is quiet. Downsides: limited clearance for cups and scales (need a shot glass first), small tray capacity that overflows during backwash, and a double hose wand design that prevents heating. Design flaws include the hot water spout outside the tray, tricky pre-infusion, less intuitive steam valve, and an overly sensitive display module. Despite these, it's the best machine I've owned.
Outstanding Espresso Machine with Exceptional Build and Performance
The fit, finish, and quality of this espresso machine are top-notch. It heats smoothly and quickly, with seemingly endless steam and hot water, even without a direct water line. Steam power is impressive, effortlessly frothing almond, oat, coconut, and skim milks. The packaging from Seattle Coffee was excellent, with double-boxing for protection. While not cheap, the adage 'you get what you pay for' rings true. This is a manual machine, so beginners will face a learning curve in dosing, tamping, and brewing. However, with practice, it's easy to use and consistently produces outstanding shots. I'd rate it 5 stars across the board, deducting one star for ease of use only because mastery requires practice, but the controls are straightforward and the results are worth the effort.
Extremely Let Down
The Rocket espresso machine was non-functional upon arrival. Excessive brew pressure caused the OPV to leak hot water from the front, and adjusting the screw did not affect the pressure. The pump likely needs a functioning inlet/outlet bypass. I briefly spoke with Seattle Coffee Gear, who shipped it, and they are looking into the issue.
