De'Longhi La Specialista Maestro: Bean-to-Cup Espresso with Cold Brew: Review

Looking for an espresso machine that gives you complete control over every shot? The De'Longhi La Specialista Maestro is a semi-automatic bean-to-cup machine designed for home baristas who want to craft café-quality drinks. It features a built-in conical burr grinder with 15 settings, smart tamping technology that eliminates guesswork, and an active temperature control system with five infusion temperatures. Perhaps its standout feature is the cold extraction technology that brews cold coffee in minutes without heat. With eight beverage presets, automatic and manual milk frothing, and a 19-bar Italian pump, this machine aims to replace your coffee shop visits. Priced at around $1,249, it sits at the premium end of the home espresso market, but its versatility and precision may justify the investment for avid coffee lovers.

Product Overview

The La Specialista Maestro replaces the need for multiple appliances by combining a grinder, tamper, and espresso machine in one unit. Its stainless steel construction gives it a sturdy, professional look that fits well on most countertops. The machine measures approximately 15.5 x 14 x 17 inches, but its solid build means it requires a dedicated space. The included components are extensive: a stainless steel milk frothing jug with the LatteCrema system, single and double coffee filters, a cleaning brush, descaling sample, and a water hardness test strip. The machine operates at 1450 watts and requires a standard 120-volt outlet. For those who enjoy customization, the 15 grind settings and 5 temperature options allow fine-tuning for different bean types. The cold extraction technology is unique: it uses a cold water cycle to produce concentrated cold brew or iced espresso in minutes, rather than the traditional overnight steep. The machine also includes a commercial-style steam wand for manual latte art, alongside the automatic LatteCrema frother for one-touch milk texturing. Overall, this machine is built for users who want hands-on involvement in the coffee-making process without sacrificing convenience.

Build & Materials

The De'Longhi La Specialista Maestro is built around a stainless steel chassis with a metallic finish that resists fingerprints and cleans easily. The front panel houses a rotary dial and backlit buttons for selecting beverage presets. The bean hopper on top holds enough beans for multiple shots, and the water reservoir is accessible from the side. The burr grinder sits internally, and the smart tamping mechanism integrates seamlessly into the brewing group – simply pull the lever to tamp the freshly ground coffee. The machine includes a removable drip tray and a warming plate on top for cups.

The steam wand is articulated and features a rubber grip for safety. Overall, the design prioritizes durability and ease of maintenance, with removable parts for cleaning. The 19-bar Italian pump is a standard component for high-quality espresso machines, and the internal plumbing is designed to handle the cold extraction cycle without freezing issues. The machine also includes a water hardness test strip and a cleaning brush, underscoring its focus on longevity and care.

Shot Quality

Reviews consistently praise the shot quality from the Maestro. The combination of the precise grinder, smart tamping, and temperature control produces espresso with rich crema and balanced flavor. Users note that the machine requires a short learning curve to dial in the right grind and dose for different beans, but once set, shots are consistent. The automatic milk frother produces creamy microfoam for lattes, while the manual wand allows for more control for latte art.

The cold extraction technology is a highlight: it produces a smooth, concentrated cold brew that can be served over ice or diluted. However, some reviewers mention that switching between coffee types requires adjusting grind settings, which can lead to wasted coffee if not dialed correctly. The machine also alerts when descaling is needed, and routine cleaning is straightforward. Overall, performance is excellent for home use, approaching commercial quality for espresso and milk drinks.

Amazing espresso machine with superb extraction
This espresso machine is absolutely amazing! If you are a coffee enthusiast, this is the perfect choice. It's very user-friendly: the grinder and built-in tamper are efficient and easy to clean. Just steer clear of overly oily beans. I really enjoy the strong extraction. The milk frother works great, especially without the automatic attachment. The machine alerts you when descaling is needed. If you don't have a water softener or reverse osmosis, use bottled water. I love that it can make both hot and cold espresso-based drinks. My friends rave about my coffee. I've tried many machines, but this one is unbeatable at its price point—other automatic ones brew weak and disappointing coffee.
Disappointed with New Model's Complexity
I owned the older model since 2017 and my whole family loved it. After 9 years, the grinder and gaskets wore out, so I bought the new one, expecting the same great experience. However, I'm disappointed. With the older model, you could set it and forget it, making any drink with the same grind settings. Now, for each different drink, you have to change the settings, and you only find out after wasting grinds that it won't work because the grind is either too small and blocks the coffee from coming out. This ends up taking 3-4-5 attempts and wasting more grinds and creating more mess to finally find the right dose and grind. It takes about 13 minutes to make anything. With 4 people at home each wanting their own beverage, it's impossible because each different drink requires starting over with dose and settings repeatedly. It's frustrating.
Perfect for Coffee Enthusiasts
Exceptional quality and simple to operate. Excellent coffee and lattes! Extremely satisfied and amazed, highly recommend!
